SCRIPTURE OF WEN-CHANG EMPEROR’S HIDDEN MERITS
Emperor says: For the past seventeen reincarnation lives, I had continuous been government officer, and never abuse civilians or been a cruel officer. I saved people from disaster, aided people in desperate, had pity for lonely people, tolerated other’s mistakes, took various actions of hidden merits, all recorded in the heavenliness. If people could have the same heart as mine, heaven will bring good fortune to them.
The Emperor preach people and say: There had been real stories that one saved the ants and ranked the first in imperial exam, one buried the dead body of a snake and received the glory of a prime minister.
If you wish to widen the field of your fortune, must rely on your good heart, always give helping hands to others, and take various actions of hidden merits. Benefit to all animals and people; practice morality and receive good fortunes. With integrity that preach for the heaven; allegiance to the country and save your people. Loyal to superior, devote to parents; respect elder brother, honest to friend. Pay respect to virtuosity and heaven, pray to Buddha and read religious scriptures, repay the favor of country, officers, teachers, and parents; preaching with speeches, words, and actions. Aid the desperate ones as if saving the fish in near dry pond; save ones in disaster as if saving the birds from thick net. Show sympathy to widows and widowers; respect elders and sympathize the poor. Gather clothing and food for cold and hungry people on the street; donate coffins to avoid corps bee exposed. Rich ones shall help their relatives, often give out alms to neighbors and friends. The scale must be fair, not to buy heavy and sell light. Be absolvent to servants, shall not chastise or being harsh. Print religious scriptures; build or repair temples and shrines. Donate medicines to save the sickness, hand out water to relieve the thirst. Buy captive animals for releasing, or maintain as vegetarian to avoid killing. Watch out for insects and warms when taking steps; prohibit setting fire in the forest. Provide lights on the street for pedestrians, build boats to help people to cross river.
Shall not go to mountains to trap birds, shall not go to water to poison fish and shrimps. Shall not kill farming cattle; shall not throw away written papers. Shall not scheme for other’s property; shall not fornicate other’s wife and daughters; shall not solicit others into dispute; shall not damage other’s reputation; shall not destroy other’s marriage. Shall not break the harmony of brotherhood of others for self advantage. Shall not break the harmony of kinship of others for self interest. Shall not rely on one’s power to insult honest people; shall not rely on one’s fortune to bully the poor.
Honest people will get closer to you, and support your morality of body and soul. Bad people will stay away, and avoid any disasters to come close. Shall often hide the bad things and disclose good deeds, shall not affirm with lips but deny with heart. Cut away bushes that block the streets; clear obstacles on the roads. Repair winding roads that exist for hundreds of years; build bridges for thousands of people to pass. Preach admonitions to eliminate badness; donate money to support others to success. Conduct actions according to heaven’s rule; speaking words that along with other’s heart. Place the words of sages on the wall; careful with own actions even in the dark. Do no evil, do all goods, misfortune would never arrive, but often protected by fortune deities. Near retribution will place on self, far retribution will place on descendents. Hundreds of good fortunes will come; thousands of lucky clouds will gather, they all gained from the hidden merits!

Wish the merits from reading this,
To spread out to everyone,
For me and the rest of souls,
Will all achieve the realm of Buddha.
